Boston globe failing the test

But disagreement persisted over whether students should have the option of only using their GPAs without having to rely on any test scores. That approach would mirror a temporary plan the school system used for admission to the exam schools this fall because the pandemic prevented the in-person entrance exam to be administered last year.

Applicants could use MCAS scores of meets or exceeds expectations or grades of a B or better to qualify for the admission pool. As a result, a more diverse group of students was admitted to the exam schools. Rosann Tung, an education researcher and former BPS parent, cited the results from the temporary plan as evidence that test scores were unnecessary. Tung made clear that she would not support any proposal that mandates students taking an exam.

Michael Contompasis, a former Boston superintendent who co-chairs the task force, repeatedly said he wanted every applicant to take an exam. However, he said he was open to creating a process in which high-achieving students with low test scores could file an appeal to have the test scores waived with a letter from a teacher or another educator verifying their qualifications. In one of the most striking findings, the report revealed that black and Latino students with MCAS scores similar to their white and Asian peers do not score as well on the Independent School Entrance Exam, dashing their chances for admission.

The report also found that the average grade point average for black and Latino students in this group was also one point lower than their white and Asian peers. That calculation also calls for the random assignment of qualifying students to the three exam schools instead of having students rank their preferences. At this point, however, it seems unlikely the school system will overhaul admission requirements. In an interview, Michael Loconto, chairman of the School Committee, said the school system should instead continue to work on improving the quality of education in its lower-grade schools and increasing access to test prep programs.

Walsh in committed to expanding the Exam School Initiative from seats to While it was unclear if the program has reached that capacity, diversity has increased. But the effort so far has not led to any notable shifts in student demographics at Latin School, the crown jewel of the system. First he had feelings for her, then she had feelings for him, then they kissed, whatever. It was painful to watch them be together in that way — and not because the writers intended it to be. A deliberate lack of chemistry, like when one of the two is secretly gay, can play well.
